Through our Advocacy Program, Safe Schools NC holds the state of North Carolina accountable for implementing the State Board of Education's Harassment, Bullying, and Discrimination Policy by working to ensure that schools provide a safe school environment for all students. We also work to ensure that students know their rights in schools, including the right to form Gay Straight Alliances.
Safe Schools NC's Executive Director, Melissa Weiss and Safe Schools NC Board member, Janet Joyner, are members of the NC Department of Instruction's Safe Schools Committee. On this committee, Weiss and Joyner advocate for statewide policies, practices, and trainings that will ensure that LGBT students, and those perceived to be, are provided with a safe and affirming educational environment.
Are you working on LGBT issues in your local schools? Are you in need of assistance with your efforts? Are you seeking resources or advice?
