Safe Schools NC's Book Donation Project

Ever wondered if teachers and principals know anything about  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) kids?  While some educators have taught themselves about sexual orientation and gender identity, many only know inaccurate media stereotypes.  Because LGBTQ youth are now coming out as early as middle school, teachers, principals, and guidance counselors must have correct information so they can provide safe environments for all their students.

Safe Schools NC is coordinating the donation of two research-based books to the professional libraries of all of North Carolina's 516 public high schools

· Stephanie Brill and Rachel Pepper's The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Families and Professionals

· David Campos' Understanding Gay and Lesbian Youth: Lessons for Straight School Teachers, Counselors, and Administrators

Placing these books in the schools' professional libraries (the teachers library) will improve the chance that educators will have accurate information about LGBTQ children and youth's needs and concerns.  Over 50 schools have already received copies.  With your help, these excellent books will help educators and their students for decades to come. To see if your school has been sent a copy, go to http://safeschoolsnc.com/CurrentProjects/SchoolInformation.aspx

For more information about donating copies of these texts to your alma mata or your local schools, please contact Safe Schools NC at contact@safeschoolsnc.com.
